Traces is a story of cultural inheritance, life, lineage, & loss. This work gives voice to the lost identities of my foremothers. Covering more than 175 linear feet, the maiden names of my ancestors lost in marriage and gone before their time, are honored here as in a family journal. The shadows, like the names themselves are ethereal. Like chasing shadows, or chasing ghosts, each name is but the name of a father. The original installation lined the gallery walls surrounding the sculpture Vow, a 10’ pelvic bone covered in 13 wedding gowns. Additional adaptations were made installing the names to form a portal going back in space.
