I’m thrilled to announce two artist residencies in the coming year that support my ongoing investigation into the impacts of climate change at Vashon Artist Residency in the spring, and then Willapa Bay AiR in the fall.
My research during this time centers on estuaries, fragile ecosystems where climate change is conspicuous. Barnacles are a returning motif in my work. They embody a paradox: vital to marine health, yet indicators of disruption and ecological change. And I find them beautiful.
At Vashon, I will spend time on the island’s shoreline and estuarine systems to gather natural forms to experiment with. I’ll cast surfaces designed to invite barnacle attachment. It will be a big experiment but what fun!
At Willapa Bay AiR, I will build on this research walking the bay and ocean and continue material experimentation with long-term submerging of sculptural forms, to support barnacle growth grounded in place. Don’t fret, I’ll be using non-toxic processes. And as always, I’ll write to develop new texts to integrate into the work.
